Located just north of the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex in Tarrant County, Grapevine is one of the oldest communities in North Texas originating a full year before statehood in 1844. The city is named for the abundant native grapevines early settlers found growing in the area. Today, its annual GrapeFest wine-tasting festival draws more than 100,000 connoisseurs from throughout the region. With a population of nearly 40,000, Grapevine is an active community with an historic downtown that has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places, a low crime rate, quiet neighborhoods, good schools and reasonable commutes to area cities. One mile north of downtown is Grapevine Lake, the fourth busiest lake in Texas. The lake features 146 miles of shoreline and has become the premier windsurfing, sailing and fishing area in North Texas. The 7,380 acre area includes an extensive park system with public tennis courts, baseball and softball diamonds, football and soccer fields, jogging and biking trails, a swimming pool, playgrounds and picnic facilities. Grapevine is also a golf Mecca with three public golf courses, including one designed by golfing legend Byron Nelson.
